Denmark | June

June equals warm summer nights, ice cold drinks and barbeques. But for this month’s roundup I wanted to show you something a bit different, so I decided to highlight what to do when spending a vacation in Copenhagen. Here we go!

Apollo Bar is a stunning eating place with wine, beer, small dishes and snacks. It’s open every day from the morning hours to late afternoon. From Thursday - Saturday it’s possible to dine in the evening as well.

The place is run by the talented chef, Frederik Bille Brahe, who really knows his way around food. The atmosphere is quite special, as the bar is an integrated part of Kunsthal Charlottenborg - one of the largest and most beautiful exhibitions for contemporary art in Northern Europe.

Copenhagen Contemporary

say hi to_ Copenhagen Contemporary

Copenhagen Contemporary (CC) is an art gallery located on Papirøen. Those behind this project work to create an international center for contemporary art and cultural experiences in Copenhagen, which they certainly have succeeded in. The big warehouse space makes it possible for CC to create various exhibitions showing great light installations, sound and motion, performance art and video art on several screens.

Kunstforeningen Gammel Strand

I have to highlight Kunstforeningen GL STRAND as well. It’s a modern art institution located in the centre of Copenhagen. Their exhibitions are always interesting, variating from art, videos and installations. This is a very contemporary institution as they reflect on our own time and their exhibitions are addressed to a wide public. The architecture of the place is characterized by older times which fits well with the contemporary art displayed. Definitely worth a visit!

Louisiana Museum

say hi to_ Louisiana Museum Copenhagen

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is a leading international museum of modern art located a bit north of Copenhagen. Here, you’ll find a unique mix of nature and architecture that’s not seen anywhere else. Each year the museum offers 6-10 exhibitions and they feature one of the largest art collections in Scandinavia. In addition to the art collection, Louisiana is the best example of Danish modernist architecture. Designed by Jørgen Bo and Wilhelm Wohlert, the architecture reconciles with nature in an extraordinary way. It’s definitely one of my favorite places to go.

Ørestaden

say hi to_ Ørestaden

This one is a slightly different choice compared to the others, but none the less, Ørestaden is a really interesting place as it’s a newer green district in Amager, Copenhagen. Everywhere you’ll find grand contemporary architecture, water, nature and a modern atmosphere that differs from the rest of Copenhagen. With a mix of shopping, business, culture and educational institutions, Ørestad holds some significant institutions.

I can really recommend to check out VM Bjerget and 8Tallet - both designed by architect Bjarke Ingels (BIG). Furthermore there’s the largest shopping center in Denmark, Fields, the largest congress center and additional hotel, Bella Center and Bella Sky and finally the DR Concert Hall designed by architect Jean Nouvel.

Thorvaldsen

Thorvaldsens Museum is an amazing museum in the middle of Copenhagen. It opened in 1848 and became the first public museum in Denmark. As the name may reveal, the museum was built to exhibit the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen’s large oeuvre of sculptures. In addition to the sculptures, the museum has the most colorful and detailed floors and ceilings. The atmosphere is very special in this place and besides, it’s a historical building and landmark in Copenhagen. You will for sure regret not visiting Thorvaldsens Museum.
