say hi to_ Institut de Français
This next choice from our Creative Vacations is not exactly design related per-se, but if there was one thing that I've learned from living in two countries where the people did not speak my native tongue - is that learning another language can be the most valuable gift you ever give yourself. Knowing about the newest trends, designers and techniques in design is crucial for my job but on a day to day level... the ability to speak a second language is just as imperative in my life, professionally and socially.
Honestly, I can not think of a more productive way I would spend a 'learning' vacation. Whoever said just merely living in a country will allow you to learn a language is either ridiculously talented or a liar. I've lived in Germany for three and a half years and now France for three and a half years (neither German nor French being my mother tongue) and I promise you neither of these two languages were absorbed into my brain just by being there...
I tried literally everything, studying at home, watching movies in another language with subtitles, listening to the radio, adopting foreign parents who don't really speak English, dating a handful of guys who don't speak English well, going out with groups of foreign friends, having a brief marriage to a French man, sitting in a café alone looking for an old person who didn't speak English to practice with (to find out they had a Marseille accent and I couldn't understand them anyways), just existing in another country. Didn't work.
It takes hardcore daily effort and going to school. I had to go to French school once I arrived here in France intensively for three months, five hours per day just to grasp the basics before I could start using my broken French on unsuspecting victims. But... who over the age of 25 has time (or money?) to juggle full time job and intensive language lessons?
Search no further! I've found you a hardcore French language bootcamp on the French Riviera, which will have you ordering your café crème en Français and impressing clients in no time. Getting a girlfriend or boyfriend on the side of your studies is a fun way to do homework though, just saying.

Institut de Français
What? Intensive One Month French Courses
Where? Villefranche-sur-mer, France
When? June 5-30th, July 3-28th, Aug 7-Sept 1st
I heard about Institut de Français when I first arrived to France and ever since it has been a dream of mine to go there. Your classes are 8.5 hours per day, 5 days per week, for anywhere between two weeks and one month straight - TOTAL immersion. For extremely impatient and kind of lazy people like me - this seems like the perfect answer to learning, or having a speedy start to learning another language. I think the quickest way to learn, from experience, is when this type of thing is forced on your non-stop, relentlessly for a set duration of time.
Not to mention, this is the school where ambassadors and actors go when they need to learn french QUICK for new positions to French speaking countries or foreign films. Just to give you an idea of the effectiveness of their courses and method.
There are two options to go for two weeks and to go for four weeks.
May 8 – June 2
June 5 – June 30
July 3 – July 28
Aug. 7 – Sept. 1
One Month_ 3.830 €
Two Weeks_ 1.915 €
+ Accommodation (they have various options which include meals)
Okay I know what your thinking - that looks like A LOT of money, especially compared to some other programs. I am so passionate about this just because I learned first hand how hard/nearly impossible it is to live somewhere and not be able to speak the language. Not only that but how utterly frustrating it is when it takes you over one year to slowly learn it the 'free' way.
I lost FAR more money for the months that I could not find a job or clients, due to lack of language and for that - I think that 4k for a skill like this is more than worth it.
